Grace Greater Than Our Sin - Julia Johnston

    

Julia Harriette Johnston was an American hymn writer born on January 21^st, 1849, in Salineville, Ohio. Her parents were a Presbyterian preacher and a poet, respectively. Julia followed in her mother’s footsteps and began writing poetry from a young age. From the time of her conversion onward, Julia faithfully laboured for the Master in many pursuits. For more than forty years, she was a Sunday school teacher of infants, was president of the Presbyterian Missionary Society in Peoria, Il, for more than 20 years, wrote several books for Sunday Schools, and penned more than 500 hymns. She died at age 70 on March 6^th, 1919, in Peoria, Illinois.

     Of her many hymns, two remain in common use to this day: Grace Greater Than Our Sin and He Ransomed Me. Written in 1910, Grace Greater Than Our Sin remains a favourite of many, though more than a century has passed since it was first published in Daniel B. Towner’s collection “Hymns Tried and True.”
