Grace Greater Than Our Sin - Julia Johnston

Julia Harriette Johnston was an American hymn writer born on January 21st, 1849, in Salineville, Ohio. Her parents were a Presbyterian preacher and a poet, respectively. Julia followed in her mother’s footsteps and began writing poetry from a young age. From the time of her conversion onward, Julia faithfully laboured for the Master in many pursuits. For more than forty years, she was a Sunday school teacher of infants, was president of the Presbyterian Missionary Society in Peoria, Il, for more than 20 years, wrote several books for Sunday Schools, and penned more than 500 hymns. She died at age 70 on March 6th, 1919, in Peoria, Illinois.

     Of her many hymns, two remain in common use to this day: Grace Greater Than Our Sin and He Ransomed Me. Written in 1910, Grace Greater Than Our Sin remains a favourite of many, though more than a century has passed since it was first published in Daniel B. Towner’s collection “Hymns Tried and True.”

Marvellous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt,
Yonder, on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt.

Sin and despair like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss,
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide,
What can avail to wash it away?
Look! there is flowing a crimson tide;
Whiter than snow you may be today.

Marvellous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe;
You that are longing to see his face,
Will you this moment his grace receive?

Refrain
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within,
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin.
