We Rest On Thee- Edith Cherry

  

Edith Adeline Gilling Cherry was born February 9^th, 1872 and lived a short but useful life for the Master. Struck with infantile paralysis at 18 months, and suffering strokes at the ages of 12 and 25, Edith knew what it was to suffer, but those who knew her described her as:

     “...a bright winsome girl with a spirit deeply taught in the truths of God. Sweet and gentle in disposition, but frail in body, yet that did not sadden her life — scarcely handicapped it — seemed rather to thin the casement through which the light of Heaven shone into her spirit so clearly as to make the Homeland almost more real than earth, things Eternal more visible and certain than the temporal."

            She is said to have never premeditated upon what she wrote, but the words flowed from her pen almost as a gift from the Lord. Many of her poems were written when she was between the ages of 12 and 15, with believers the world over finding help and comfort in the words of the young poetess. "Ready to do whatsoever my Lord the King shall appoint me" was her motto, and truly no task was too small to her, if it was done for the Master.

     Though she lived only 25 years, her lifework continues to this day through her ministry of song. The most well known of her poems is the beloved hymn “We Rest on Thee” made still more dear in the hearts of believers by the stirring testimony of Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, and Roger Youderian, martyrs for the faith who famously sang this hymn just prior to their deaths at the hands of the Auca Indians in Ecuador.
