Knowles Shaw was known throughout his life as being someone who was devoted to the Lord. He led around 1,400 people to the Lord in his lifetime. At the end of his life he said, “Oh! It is a grand thing to rally the people to the cross of Christ.” Shaw was well-known in every community he stepped in. He spoke with passion about his experiences with the Lord and his music drew others to him.
As a young boy of 12, he entered into tragedy and hardship. His father became ill and died leaving his family to figure out how to live without him. He left Shaw with a violin and thus his love of music began. He often played for dancing parties. One day, as he was playing at a dancing party, he had a vision of some of his past experiences and especially his father passing away. He stopped playing even after the crowd continued to urge him to play. Instead, he shared his heart with the crowd. He came home so moved, that he pondered what had happened for days, even telling his mom that he was battling the devil. This was a turning point in his life. He held so much weight on his shoulders as the head of his household to provide for the rest of the family. He began to attend Flat Rock Church with a new purpose. After hearing a sermon, he confessed his faith and was baptized on September 13, 1852.
