God Will Take Care of You - Stillman Martins

This song of encouragement was written in 1904 by the Stillman Martins, a husband and wife team. They were active in evangelism and ministered throughout America. He preached, and she sang and helped with the music.

The story is told that Evangelist Martin had been invited to speak at a church some distance away, but that Sunday morning, Mrs. Martin suddenly became ill and was confined to bed. Because he was concerned for his wife, he wanted to cancel the preaching engagement and stay with her. At that moment, their nine-year-old son spoke up, “Father, don’t you think that if God wants you to preach today, He will take care of Mother while you are away?” Mr. Martin heeded his son’s words and went to preach. His sermon was used of God as several people accepted Christ as their Saviour.

When he returned home, he was relieved to find his wife feeling much better. While he was away, the faith of their young son had inspired her to write a poem she called “God Will Take Care of You.” Later that evening, Mr. Martin composed the music for his wife’s poem, and within a year, the song was published. It soon became a favorite, giving comfort to many for years to come.

Together, the couple collaborated in writing a number of gospel songs. Mrs. Martin is also known for writing the words to the popular gospel song “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” The Martins continued their ministry until the Lord called Mr. Martin home in 1935.

All Christians need comfort and encouragement. Martins’ young son knew the truth of God’s Word. Singing these words with childlike faith will remind the weary believer that “God Will Take Care of You.” Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved (Psalm 55:22).

Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath his wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.

Refrain:
God will take care of you,
Through ev’ry day, O’er all the way,
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.

Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail,
God will take care of you.

All you may need he will provide,
God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied,
God will take care of you.

No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon his breast,
God will take care of you.
